Celebrate Jesus | Lament & Lachrymosity – December 17, 2017
It is such a happy time of year, right? Families gathering together, friends enjoying social get-togethers, companies throwing holiday parties, gifts given and received, joy and celebration all around. Yet the story of Jesus’ birth has elements of great sadness and heartache. It was prophesied that Jesus’ birth would be accompanied by great suffering and sorrow. For example, Jeremiah 31:15 predicts what was fulfilled in Matthew 2:16, a horrific death-filled outcome of an evil tyrants rage. Hope is not silenced, joy is not adrift, but reality is not always jingle bells and tinsel. The story of suffering is never the end, but we need to listen to its lessons and be prepared to endure and embrace our own suffering as well as that of those around us during what, for most others, is a time of joy.
